We are a big vessel, something can go wrong at any time. Especially at night when only a few people are awake to take care of the ship. In order to find unwanted fire or leakage the Eendracht crew put up a system called Brand- en Lekrondeor in English Fire and Leakage Round. According to a specific list we comb through the whole ship and make sure everything is as it should be and that everyone is safe.

We start at cabin 32, a tiny door leading to a storeroom in compartment 4 (here sleeps the crew). Under the accommodation deck we make sure there is no leakage or any signs of smoke, heat and fire. Now you see why we call it the Fire and Leakage Round: we make sure there are no abnormalities! Furthermore in ccompartment 4 we secure the printer room, a drying locker and our beloved laundry room. When we are at sea the water tight doors, which connect the different compartments are kept closed for obvious safety reasons. Therefore we have to go back up, through the mess and down the stairs again or even outside on deck and enter the other compartments. That sounds tedious but it is actually good to collect a few extra steps.

Our round continues with the fan room, which is underneath the outer bridge and the Kamelenhok and Eendenkooi that can be found in the bosun’s workshop in the aft (the back of the ship). Then we cross the Holland-America-Kade that connects the aft and foredeck and also offers the entrance to the mess, galley and compartments 1,2 and 3.

In the galley we keep an extra eye on the stoves and make sure they are turned off. In the mess room, where the round continues, we pay special attention that everything is sea-tight. Every object is supposed to be where it „lives“. Otherwise the healing and rolling of the ship has everything flying around.

Then we go down the stairs to compartment 3. Before we enter the accommodations, we check for the temperature of the fridge and freezer in the dry store. In compartment 3 we first enter the engine room. We open all the control flaps in the floor. No leakage can hide from us! Out of the engine room we turn right to check the hallway near cabin 15 to make sure everything is in order with the cabins and the people that are sleeping. After that we make our way back up the stairs to then pass the mess room and go down to compartment 2.

Hallo aus dem Bowthrusterroom

We climb down to the Schapskoi, another beloved storage (and hangout) spot. The watertight door to compartment 1truly is an obstacle, but we overcome it daily. Lastly the bow thruster room and the sail storage in compartment 1 getschecked!

To make this task more enjoyable there is a sensor in every place named above. These have to be touched by a red sensor. That makes a very satisfying beeping noise. If that sensor is broken or out of battery, the motivation to fulfil theFire and Leakage Round decreases exponentially! We still do it very thoroughly, of course!

However, the search for fire and leakage is not the only reason for our nightly rounds. Since more and more objects and sometimes even people vanish for unexplainable reasons (especially when they are needed for tasks like cleaning the toilets), these rounds developed into kind of a retrieval program. Not to retrieve the missing things though, but to find the perpetrator: There are rumours, that a certain leprechaun and its minions, the fairies, are the reason for the continuous loss of our valuables. The leprechaun is never seen and has not been found yet. But that´s exactly what we´re working on. Therefore the Fire and Leakage Round became the Fairy and Leprechaun Round for everyone who is in knowledge of these creatures and determined to finally end the thievery. This of course has nothing to do with our untidiness.
