Sailing maneuver: bracing
Today I want to describe a sailing maneuver to you: the bracing. Our board language is English, so I decided to write this blog in English, too.
On our ship we have four square sails. These sails are attached to the yards. If we want to change the course, we need to turn all the sails. To do so we also need to turn the yards. This is called bracing.
For the bracing we need many ropes because each of the four yards has two braces, one on the port and one on the starboard side. And we must think about the sheet and the tack from the course sail because they hold the sail down and then we can’t turn the yards.
The first step is easing out the sheets and tacks of the course sail. Next, we ease out the braces on one side so we can pull at the braces from the other side. It’s important to pull simultaneously because the yards are connected. Before we coil up everything, we have to make sure that all the yards are parallel.

Meine Erfahrungen mit dem Brassen als »deck leader«:
Bei einem Segelmanöver alle Personen und Seile zu koordinieren, ist ziemlich stressig. Um die nötigen Kommandos zu geben, muss man auf dem Schiff hin und her laufen, weil die Schoten und Takleinen »unten« vom Vordeck und die Brassen (Rahleinen) »oben« vom Brückendeck geführt werden.
Unser Gulden Leeuw-Segeltraininghandbuch besagt, dass man mindestens 14 Leute braucht, um zu brassen. Nachdem ich dieses Manöver bereits einige Male durchgeführt habe, habe ich entdeckt, dass es auch mit fünf Personen möglich ist. Vorausgesetzt, es weht nur schwacher oder gar kein Wind, da die Rahen auch etwas Angriffsfläche für den Wind bieten.
